Nevada Rep. Shelley Berkley (D) outraised Sen. Dean Heller (R) in the third quarter, raising $1.2 million to Heller’s $675,000, according to figures released by their campaigns.

Berkley raised a similar amount in the second quarter, and as of the end of September, she had $3.2 million in cash on hand. Heller’s not far behind with about $2.8 million in the bank.

Both candidates are expected to have plenty of money by this time next fall. The race represents one of the Democrats’ best opportunities to win a Republican Senate seat next year, and Republicans will work hard to hold it as they aim to retake the Senate majority.

Across the country in another top-tier Senate race in Virginia, former Sen. George Allen (R) announced raising $900,000 in the third quarter. Allen had $1.8 million in cash on hand at the end of September. Allen has raised $3.5 million to date in his bid to win back his old seat.

Allen’s opponent, former governor and Democratic National Committee Chairman Tim Kaine, had not released his fundraising total at press time. Jamie Radtke, Allen’s top competitor for the GOP nomination, announced raising $116,000 last quarter, her best fundraising period yet.
