Rob Cornilles, the likely Republican nominee in the Oregon 1st district special election, released his first TV ad Tuesday. It features Cornilles running around the district in jogging gear — while running against Congress.

“Like you, I’ve had it with Washington,” Cornilles says in the 30-second ad. “Politicians more concerned with their jobs than yours. And both parties are at fault. We need a new direction.”

Those themes are the ones Cornilles is hoping will resonate with voters in this solidly Democratic district that President Barack Obama carried by 25 points in 2008. The Republican is telling voters he’ll be an independent voice and a change from former Rep. David Wu (D), who resigned in August following reports that he is mentally unstable and had been accused of assaulting a young woman.

Cornilles will learn who his Democratic opponent is Nov. 8 when voting in the all-mail-ballot election ends. Ballots were mailed late last week, and the leading Democratic contenders are state Sen. Suzanne Bonamici, state Labor Commissioner Brad Avakian and state Rep. Brad Witt.

A Cornilles spokeswoman did not reveal the size of the ad buy but said it was running on broadcast stations in Portland.
