Democrat Getting Local Boost for Jerry Costello’s Seat

Downstate Democrats say they are coalescing behind former St. Clair County Regional Superintendent of Schools Brad Harriman to run for retiring Rep. Jerry Costello’s (D-Ill.) seat.

Madison County Democratic Chairman Matt Melucci said, “Everybody is getting behind Brad Harriman” following Madison County Chief Judge Ann Callis’  recent decision not to run.

Melucci told Roll Call that Harriman is the only candidate planning to seek his county party’s endorsement.

“I’m not aware of any other candidate who’s going to appear, or ask for an endorsement, but we don’t slam the door,” Melucci said.

The southwest Illinois district is competitive, but Democrats have had trouble finding a candidate to run there following Costello’s announcement not to seek a 13th term.

Several Republicans have indicated they will run, including 2010 lieutenant governor nominee Jason Plummer and former Belleville Mayor Roger Cook.
