Thomas Jefferson’s esoteric religious views have been a source of historical debate for more than 200 years. Now, the Bible he assembled by cutting and pasting selected verses from English, French, Latin and Greek versions of the four Gospels is on display at the National Museum of American History. The third president’s intent was to distill the ethical teachings of Jesus and excise what he considered the supernatural elements of Christian teaching. Reflected in the glass is Harry Rubenstein, curator of the museum.
