An up-and-coming variety act is pulling out the big guns for a television pilot, locking in D.C. “Mayor for life” Marion Barry for an interview about his political legacy and stormy career.

Lawyer-cum-comedy-troupe-co-founder Jesse Sommer said he became a student of Barry’s contributions to the civil rights and D.C. home rule movements while teaching constitutional law at Ballou Senior High School. So when he and his fellow performers came up with a plan to tape their prospective TV pilot, “The Channel Guide,” adding Barry to the program was a no-brainer.

“He’s an incredibly colorful character,” Sommer said of the arrest-prone politician. The pilot will be recorded live this Sunday evening at the Riot Act Comedy Theater at 801 E St. NW. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

Barry will be one of two “legitimate” interviews conducted during the show, which will also feature comedy sketches and the debut of a parody rap video.

The other interviewee? That’d be veteran porn star Nina Hartley, who played the Hillary Rodham Clinton role in the 2008 presidential race spoof “Who’s Nailin’ Paylin?”
