President Barack Obama hit the road for lunch Wednesday, hopping across the river for a pie run that will almost assuredly spark a significant uptick in future covers for fledgling Del Ray Pizzeria.

The first family’s local dining habits have been well-documented, running the gamut from gourmet burgers to date nights at some of the most sought-after seats in town. Treks to Capitol Hill have included pop-ins at:

Art and Soul, Good Stuff Eatery, Sticky Rice, Ted’s Bulletin and We, The Pizza. Expeditions into the Old Dominion have culminated at: the Liberty Tavern, the Majestic, Ray’s Hell Burger and Restaurant Eve.

Obama’s visit stirred up secluded Del Ray, with Secret Service clamping down on any extraneous activity for several blocks within the normally pedestrian-friendly enclave.

Once inside the modest pizzeria, POTUS ordered up three pies: the signature Supreme Clientele (built around tomato sauce, fresh mozzarella, pepperoni, sausage, peppers, red onions, olives and mushrooms); a custom sausage, green peppers and onion construct and a traditional pepperoni pizza. (Wonder if the ex-Chicagoan has ever indulged in their deep-dish productions?)

Before departing, Obama made sure to slip staff a well-appreciated cash tip; no word on the amount, but personnel said they were pleased with the gratuity.

The first family is no stranger to the Del Ray area. As Wisconsin Republican and self-appointed presidential calorie-counter Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner undoubtedly knows, POTUS treated his daughters at the neighboring frozen custard shop, the Dairy Godmother, on Father’s Day in 2009.
