Is Ca$h Wednesday Next for Ron Paul?
Next week could be totally awesome. No, we’re not going to Mardi Gras (one day, Crescent City, one day). But if history is any guide, GOP presidential hopeful Ron Paul may soon declare “CA$H Wednesday” all his.
The Texas Republican, the gloom-and-doom candidate who has yet to experience a frontrunner “surge” in the languishing nomination fight, has his share of fiercely devoted followers. And he has capitalized on the legion of hearts and minds that he controls by calling on supporters to throw cash his way every chance he gets.
Paul’s virtual fundraising blitzes are known as “money bombs,” and they’re typically scheduled to coincide with some historical event or another.
His flock of followers undoubtedly opened their wallets during his Aug. 20 push (birthday bomb). Hardcore libertarians were obviously the target of his Sept. 17 (Constitution Day) and Dec. 16 (Boston Tea Party) efforts. Paul played the military card Nov. 11 (Support Them Now/Veterans Day bomb). And campaign junkies must have been psyched about the Oct. 19 (Black This Out! retaliation bomb for post-Las Vegas debate snub) and the Jan. 14 (South Carolina and Beyond power play) rallying cries.
The most recent cash grabs, however, are our personal favorites. Because you just gotta admire the “End the TSA Now!” gold he spun out of the row that his son, Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), had with aviation security authorities last month. And what’s more endearing than a Valentine’s Day solicitation dedicated to “No One But Paul.”
So we look forward, after Fat Tuesday’s revelry, to see what the Paul campaign could make out of the first day of Lent, Ash Wednesday.
