Ohio: Tom Hanks, Bob Dole and John Dingell Endorse Marcy Kaptur
Academy Award-winning actor Tom Hanks, former Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole (R-Kan.) and Rep. John Dingell (D-Mich.) are supporting Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D-Ohio) in her primary against Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio) next week.
While the trio might appear to be an unusual one, Kaptur’s team boasts she worked with all three to build the National World War II Memorial.
“As partners with Congresswoman Kaptur in the long national effort to build the Memorial, we wish her all the best in her campaign for re-election and we urge Ohio voters to support her on March 6,” the three said jointly in a letter distributed by team Kaptur.
The Hanks endorsement is unique because Kaptur’s opponent is known for his support among Hollywood types. For example, Kucinich counts Shirley MacLaine and Sean Penn as his friends, and recording mogul Russell Simmons will campaign for the two-time former presidential candidate this weekend in the district.
But as movie buffs will remember, Hanks starred in the World War II film “Saving Private Ryan” and served as a top spokesman for the campaign to build the memorial on the National Mall. Dole and Dingell both served in the military during World War II, and Dole won two Bronze Stars during his tour.
It’s also worth noting Hanks is a consistent Democratic donor, although he hasn’t given money to Kaptur’s campaigns in recent cycles, according to online records with the Federal Election Commission.
