New York: Grace Meng Nabs Local Party Nod for Ackerman Seat

The Queens County Democratic Organization endorsed state Assemblywoman Grace Meng for the open Queens-based 6th district seat Monday.

Assemblyman Rory Lancman (D) will challenge Meng in a primary in the strongly Democratic district.

“Congrats to my friend Grace, looking forward to a spirited campaign on the issues. #NY06,” he tweeted.

The demographics of the district — about 40 percent of residents are of Asian descent — are likely to play a role in any primary because Meng is an Asian-American. There’s also a large Jewish population in the redrawn district. Lancman is Jewish.

Rep. Gary Ackerman (D) had said he would run in this district, but he announced his retirement Thursday.
