Rep. Jeff Flake raised $935,000 for his Senate bid in the first quarter of the year and ended March with about $3 million in cash on hand.

It is a strong quarter, and Flake is the favorite to win the GOP primary. However, real estate investor Wil Cardon has shown a capacity to self-fund and has been on television with ads, including this one currently on the air funded with a $250,000 buy:

The presumptive Democratic nominee, former Surgeon General Richard Carmona, also had a big quarter. His campaign announced Tuesday that he raised more than $800,000 in the period and had $1.1 million in cash on hand at the end of March.

As for the race for the House seat Flake is vacating, former Rep. Matt Salmon (R) raised about $238,000 and had almost $470,000 in cash on hand at the end of the quarter.

Salmon first came into Congress in the 1994 GOP wave, but he left the House in 2000 to honor a self-imposed term limit pledge. He is facing off against former state Speaker Kirk Adams in the GOP primary Aug. 28.

Most unaligned Arizona GOP strategists see Salmon as the frontrunner, but Adams has picked up some noteworthy endorsements, including one from Sen. Jon Kyl (R).  The winner of the primary will almost certainly win the seat in the fall. Roll Call rates the 5th district race as Safe Republican.
