New York: EMILY’s List Endorses Louise Slaughter, Kathy Hochul
EMILY’s List gave its official endorsement to two vulnerable Congresswomen from New York today, backing Democratic Reps. Louise Slaughter and Kathy Hochul.
The group, which supports female pro-abortion rights candidates, has considerable resources to help the women it backs win elections to public office.
“[T]he entire EMILY’s List community is ready to stand strong with Kathy and Louise throughout their campaigns,” Stephanie Schriock, the group’s president, said in a statement. “Kathy kicked off this historic election cycle with her special election victory last May, and we are proud to endorse such an effective leader again today. Louise has been a progressive leader in Congress for 25 years and a consistent champion for women’s rights and health care. Together, these two women will work to move Congress in the right direction.”
Hochul’s district is the most Republican in the state, and she faces an uphill battle in winning another term. The winner of a GOP primary between former Erie County Executive Chris Collins and Army veteran David Bellavia will face Hochul in the Republican-leaning district in November.
Slaughter, 82, faces a serious challenge from Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks (R). Although Slaughter recently broke her leg, aides say she’s working hard and is definitely running for re-election.
“She’s still full of fire and going to be running a real campaign,” one national Democrat said of Slaughter.
