Updated: 9:38 p.m. | Texas Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst has donated an additional $6 million to his Senate campaign since April 1.

The figure put his total personal donations to the campaign at $8 million, according to a source in the campaign.

The campaign made the announcement in a press release. It also noted that he had received $500,000 in individual contributions in the pre-primary reporting period beginning on April 1. Campaigns must submit federal election finance reports two weeks out from the primary date.

The amount of money a campaign has at its disposal is consequential in Texas statewide races. A Lone Star State television ad buy can be as much as $1 million a week.

Dewhurst faces former state Solicitor General Ted Cruz, former ESPN analyst Craig James and former Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert in the GOP primary. The winner will almost certainly be the successor to retiring Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R).

Update | The Cruz campaign released its own pre-primary numbers as well. Although the Dewhurst personal numbers are daunting, Cruz beat him in individual donations with $542,000.
