Hawaii: VoteVets.org Adds $50K to TV Buy for Tulsi Gabbard

VoteVets.org, the largest progressive organization of veterans in the country, spent $50,000 on Wednesday to keep on air its TV ad supporting Honolulu City Councilwoman Tulsi Gabbard. The spot will now run for two more weeks.

Gabbard, who was endorsed Wednesday by EMILY’s List, is one of several Democrats vying for the nomination in Hawaii’s 2nd district, currently held by Rep. Mazie Hirono (D), who is running for Senate.

On May 16, VoteVets.org reported spending $70,000 to air its ad on broadcast TV for 10 days. Including production costs, the group’s $140,000 investment is so far the only independent expenditure for the Aug. 11 Democratic primary.

The ad features several Iraq War veterans describing Gabbard’s biography, which includes military service and public office.

Gabbard and former Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann are the leading candidates for the safe Democratic district, along with longtime Congressional aide Esther Kiaaina and former state Rep. Bob Marx.
