A new poll shows Rep. Gary Peters ahead of Rep. Hansen Clarke by double digits in their upcoming Democratic primary in Michigan’s 14th district.

Peters led Clarke, 45 percent to 27 percent, according to a survey released Wednesday and sponsored by Fox News 2 Detroit.

Michigan lost a House seat thanks to reapportionment. Republicans redrew the Congressional map last year, effectively forcing two Detroit-area Democrats to run against each other in the Aug. 7 primary.

Seventeen percent of respondents in the survey were undecided. The poll also showed Southfield Mayor Brenda Lawrence received 10 percent.

The Foster McCollum White and Baydoun poll took the opinion of 685 likely voters July 23. Eighty-seven percent of those respondents described themselves as Democrats, and the primary is open registration.

The 14th district is a safe Democratic seat. The winner of the primary next month will be the prohibitive favorite to become the next Member of Congress.

The poll had a margin of error of 3.74 points.
