Police: Woman Threatened Trey Gowdy with Gun
A woman was arrested in Spartanburg, S.C., Sunday after making strange demands of Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.) while holding a gun, according to police.
As Gowdy was waiting to pick up his daughter at First Baptist Church, the woman, Gloria Yvonne Brackett, 52, approached him and told him to “stop following her,” according to a police report of the incident.
Brackett was “carrying a black handgun,” the police report said.
Gowdy tried to explain to Brackett that he was not following her, but instead waiting for his daughter, he told police.
But when Brackett persisted with her demand, Gowdy “then put his car in reverse and backed away as quickly as possible with Ms. Brackett chasing after him on foot,” the police report said.
Gowdy drove to the police department and reported the incident. Brackett was later arrested with a .32 caliber handgun in her possession, according to the police report. She was arrested for unlawful carrying of a pistol.
“Mr. Gowdy is grateful to the Spartanburg Public Safety Department for their help last night and especially for helping make sure his daughter was safe,” said Josh Dix, a spokesman for Gowdy, adding that Gowdy would not be making further comment “given the fact that this is an ongoing investigation with a subsequent prosecution.”
Brackett faces a bond hearing at 2 p.m.
Capitol Police are also involved in the investigation, according to USCP spokeswoman Lt. Kimberly Schneider.
“USCP has an active, open investigation and is currently working with the Spartanburg South Carolina Police Department and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division,” Schneider said.
