Here’s what cut through the ad clutter today:

California 30

The Berman-Sherman race has officially gone, like, mega-ballistic.

Two new ads from the costliest Member-vs.-Member race in the country were released on Wednesday, as Democratic Reps. Howard Berman and Brad Sherman once again laid into each other. Berman’s campaign used clips from their debate last week, when Sherman wrapped his arm around Berman and the two had to be separated, as they were on the verge of engaging in a physical altercation.

Titled “Unhinged,” the ad’s announcer says, “Now we know that he’s ineffective, mean and too angry.  Brad Sherman is just not fit to represent us.”

The push behind the ad included “a significant buy across Valley cable systems” according to a Berman source, referring to the San Fernando Valley-area district that the two are vying for. Most of the San Fernando Valley lies within Los Angeles.

Sherman’s ad hits Berman for taking “more free trips than just about anyone in Congress.” The campaign apparently mailed cardboard cutouts of Berman to people in random foreign cities, who then took pictures of “Berman” at tourist spots. The Sherman camp did not immediately respond to a request for buy information.

The ad infuriated Roll Call contributing writer Norman Ornstein, who went so far as to address the whether it is fair to attack a Member for travel in today’s paper.

We have not seen this sort of rage in the Valley since Forest Whitaker went ballistic playing defense for Ridgemont High, dude.

Florida 18

House Majority PAC, a Democratic super PAC, is up with another ad going after Rep. Allen West (R) on embryonic stem cell research. A previous House Majority PAC ad aired in Denver targeting Rep. Mike Coffman (R), and altered versions of the spot have aired elsewhere. Some say these ads are below the belt, others say they are strikingly effective at motivating voters. West is running for re-election against Democrat Patrick Murphy. The spot is set to air for a week with $1.5 million behind it.

Tennessee State Senate

Talking Points Memo’s Evan McMorris-Santoro flagged this Web gem being run by a candidate running for Tennessee state Senate. Andrae McGary, the candidate featured, tweeted back: “Thanks for showing a brother some love Evan.”
