Former state Speaker Andrew Romanoff announced Saturday that he is running for Congress in Colorado’s 6th District. The Democrat made the announcement on his website.

Romanoff is seeking to challenge GOP Rep. Mike Coffman, who won re-election by a slim 2-point margin in 2012. Demographically, the district is a pure tossup and Coffman is one of the most endangered incumbents at the outset of the 2014 cycle. He has a conservative record that reflects the safe GOP seat he represented before last cycle’s redistricting.

Democrats believe they have a better shot at defeating Coffman this time around with a stronger candidate than the 2012 nominee.

Romanoff’s entrance into the race will no doubt please the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. He is well-known and has significant fundraising ability. Romanoff challenged Sen. Michael Bennet in the 2010 Democratic Senate primary and lost. But he had the endorsement of President Bill Clinton in that contest.

Other Democrats have been mentioned as possible candidates against Coffman and it remains to be seen whether Romanoff will have a clear primary.
