West Virginia: Snuffer Mulls Another Campaign for Rahall Seat

State Del. Rick Snuffer is considering a third campaign against Democratic Rep. Nick J. Rahall II.

“I’m very interested,” confirmed Snuffer, a Republican, in a phone interview with CQ Roll Call. “It’s a matter of what’s right for my family.”

If Snuffer runs again, it would mark a third rematch with Rahall. Rahall stomped Snuffer by a 30-point margin in 2004.

But Rahall’s margin of victory narrowed to 8 points when he faced Snuffer again last year. It was the congressman’s smallest winning margin since 1990.

However, there’s a chance Snuffer could run for an open seat in 2014. Rahall has confirmed interest in running to succeed retiring Democratic Sen. Jay Rockefeller next year.

Snuffer could have company. Another contender on the GOP radar is state Sen. Bill Cole, an automotive dealer with shops in the district.

The southern third of the state comprises the 3rd District, which borders Virginia and Kentucky. It was a Democratic stronghold for decades until recently, when Republicans started making inroads into local offices.
