On Wednesday morning, Georgia Rep. Phil Gingrey entered what’s expected to be a crowded and spirited Republican primary for the Peach State’s open Senate seat.

Speaking in his hometown of Augusta, Ga., Gingrey joined Rep. Paul Broun as the first two major candidates to announce bids for the seat of retiring GOP Sen. Saxby Chambliss. The news was not a surprise, as Gingrey has been putting together a campaign team for a statewide bid.

“Once we as doctors are entrusted with the well-being of our patients and their children, it is our duty to take action, to be selfless, and fulfill our obligation to the service of others,” Gingrey said, according to a press release. “I did so willingly and it brought me great joy throughout my professional career. However, I always had a desire to do more.”

A few other members are considering bids as well, and if they do run the election would result in a major overhaul of the Georgia delegation. Broun announced his campaign in early February and he held a small, statistically insignificant lead over Gingrey and Reps. Tom Price and Jack Kingston in an early poll of the GOP primary.

Democratic Rep. John Barrow is also considering a bid, and the Blue Dog’s candidacy would give the party a rare opportunity this cycle to pick up a seat.
