When last we visited with nascent D.C. tastemakers New Columbia Distillers, their signature spirit, Green Hat Gin, was just beginning to trickle into the market.
My how they’ve matured.
The hometown hooch hawkers will be releasing their debut seasonal bottling — a 90-proof production punctuated by three types of citrus (pomelo, blood orange and lemon peels all pitch in), cherry blossoms, rosemary and pepper — on Saturday.
New Columbia co-founder Michael Lowe told HOH the “Spring/Summer 2013” selection was specifically produced with mixed drinks and social gatherings in mind. “We expect it will mostly be used in gin and tonics, etc.,” he said of the deliberately boozier run. (GHG is typically bottled circa 80 proof.)
Rickey fans won’t want to sleep on this one: Lowe estimated he’ll be making only about 75 cases (roughly 900 bottles).
The “Spring/Summer 2013” gin will go on sale at 1 p.m. Saturday at the distillery (1832 Fenwick St. NE) for $34 a bottle. Local liquor stores are also expected to carry the specialty gin, but expect to pay some sort of upcharge.
