Rep. Gary Peters will announce his campaign for Senate on Wednesday, giving Democrats a top candidate to run for the open seat in Michigan.

Peters will make the announcement in his hometown of Rochester Hills, a top Democratic aide confirmed to CQ Roll Call. However, the surrounding area in Oakland County has also proved pivotal for victory in recent statewide victories.

Democrats have the advantage to hold retiring Sen. Carl Levin’s seat. Peters is not expected to face a primary, and Republicans are still looking for a candidate. CQ Roll Call Contributing Writer Stuart Rothenberg rates this race as Safe Democrat.

A spokeswoman for Peters, Haley Morris, denied the congressman has made a decision yet.

“Gary is grateful from all the encouragement he’s heard from folks around Michigan,” Morris said. “He’s weighing his decision with his family, and they will be letting everyone know soon.”

But all signs point to a Peters Senate candidacy. Last week, Debbie Dingell, the wife of longtime Rep. John D. Dingell, D-Mich., announced she would not run for the seat. Additionally, 54 Democratic state lawmakers signed a petition urging Peters to run for the seat.

Republicans have yet to field a recruit for this seat. But former Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land and Reps. Justin Amash and Mike Rogers continue to consider campaigns.

Peters’ announcement comes a couple of weeks after he posted a strong fundraising quarter — during which he raised more money than Amash and Rogers combined. (See how much other House members raised in Roll Call’s first-quarter fundraising chart).

National Journal first broke the news about Peters’ announcement.
