Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., endorsed former Gov. Mark Sanford in the special election for South Carolina’s 1st District.

The endorsement from the Palmetto State’s senior senator came in the form of a series of tweets from Graham’s campaign Twitter account on Wednesday morning.

This is a safe Republican district, but Democrats have made serious political and financial investments in his rival, nominee Elizabeth Colbert Busch.

Many national Republicans disowned Sanford’s campaign after his former wife accused him of trespassing on her property. These Republicans reasoned Sanford could embarrass the party if they wasted resources and he lost, or more unflattering personal drama was revealed.

But in the last week, some Republicans and conservatives have come to Sanford’s aid. Besides Graham, former Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas, Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., and FreedomWorks have also offered their supported.
