Artichoke Week Proceeds Apace
Count HOH among the skeptical about how delicious an artichoke-based or artichoke-inspired cocktail could be.
But we have to hand it to the folks at Boundary Road (414 H St. NE). They can mix it with the best of them.
As previously reported in HOH, the H Street neighborhood pub and bistro is celebrating Artichoke Week through Friday, serving up artichoke dishes and wines and drinks inspired by the spiky vegetable. That includes Cynar, an artichoke liqueur that is made by the same folks behind bitter drink favorite Campari.

Like we said, skeptical. But in the case of Boundary Road’s Herbed Lemonade and Cynar Spritzer, the vegetable and herb-based libation is quite refreshing and makes for a nice complement to some of the week’s featured fare: hand-cut pasta with artichoke and blue crab and a flatbread with artichoke cream, speck and grana.
The Herbed Lemonade has Cynar, Leth Gruner Veltliner wine, and tarragon and thyme lemonade. It has a smooth start and a peppery finish, a nice spring/summer drink. The Cynar Spritzer, made of Cynar, maraschino and grapefruit, is light enough to be a brunch drink. It has a more pronounced artichoke taste in the finish, but not so much it overtakes the other flavors.
Thursday and Friday are the last two days of Artichoke Week for Boundary Road. Menu is subject to change, depending on ingredients and chef’s whimsy.
