Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., announced on Wednesday that she will not seek re-election in 2014.

In an 8-minute-long video posted on her website, Bachmann detailed her decision, which she said had nothing to do with the recent investigations into her failed presidential campaign’s finances.

“After a great deal of thought and deliberation, I have decided next year, I will not to seek a fifth congressional term,” she said in a straight-to-camera delivery.

Bachmann’s decision relieves House Republicans of one of their greatest electoral headaches. The congresswoman was known for her lightning-rod commentary that could dominate a cable television news cycle — often putting top Republicans on defense as a result.

Her move also means House Republicans have a better chance of keeping her seat in 2014. Democrats targeted the conservative district, which includes the Minneapolis exurbs, mostly because they viewed Bachmann as vulnerable.

Both the Federal Election Commission and the Office of Congressional Ethics are looking into Bachmann’s campaign finance activities on her presidential campaign.

In the video, Bachmann said she considered retirement last cycle after she wrapped up her unsuccessful presidential campaign. But with just nine months until Election Day, Bachmann said she worried another Republican could not prepare in time “for what might have been a very challenging campaign”

Bachmann’s 2012 opponent, hotelier Jim Graves, already announced he was running again this cycle.
