Alex Gibney’s Favorite Recent Documentaries

Documentary filmmaker Alex Gibney is riding a wave of buzz for this new film, “We Steal Secrets: The Story of WikiLeaks.”

The film, which was released in Washington last week, is out just as alleged leaker Bradley Manning’s court martial gets under way and as the Obama administration has come under fire for its pursuit of leakers and journalists who report on national security.

Gibney, who has a knack for tapping into hot topics for his films (Jack Abramoff in “Casino Jack and the United States of Money,” Enron in “Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room,” and extraordinary rendition in “Taxi to the Dark Side,” to name but a few), told Roll Call After Dark that “It’s a golden age” for documentary film and said he’s but one of a few working in a dynamic time.

We asked what his favorite recent documentaries are, and he didn’t hesitate to recommend the following:

• “Stories We Tell” by Sarah Polley, a story of the director’s own family and the nature of myth and memory.

• “Waltz With Bashir” by Ari Folman, an animated memoir of the director’s attempts to reclaim his memories of his participation in Israel’s war with Lebanon in the 1980s.

• “The Gatekeepers” by Dror Moreh, a film that interviews six former heads of Israel’s Shin Bet secret service, about their country’s homeland security operations and history.

• “Dirty Wars” by Rick Rowley, which follows investigative journalist Jeremy Scahill’s attempt to report on covert wars on the U.S. docket.
