You can say this for Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Executive Editor David Shribman: He’ll never want for dining options in Washington again.

Shribman, a former Boston Globe bureau chief who gamely reviewed Mark Leibovich’s “This Town” for The New York Times, threw in what he thought was an easy applause line: D.C. dining sucks, particularly when it comes to pizza, sandwiches and lunch: “Of all the irritating things about Washington — the phoniness, the showy cars, the utter inability of a metropolitan area of 6.9 million people to produce a single decent slice of pizza or a passable submarine sandwich with oil and not mayonnaise.”

And then the hounds were let loose!

DCist offered its own list of favored sandwiches, “This Town, Full of Great Sandwiches,” which includes this piece of advice extolling the virtues of Fast Gourmet’s chivito: “A chivito — that Uruguayan masterpiece including beef tenderloin, black forest ham, bacon, green olives, mozzarella, and, yes, mayonnaise—should be shoved up this guy’s ass.”

The Washington Post’s Going Out Guide listed off good places to get good pizza and a sandwich — “Hey New York Times, here’s where you can get a good piece of pizza in D.C.” — with a world-weary nod to the NYT’s overall attitude toward D.C.: “But we get it — the New York Times likes to pick on us, especially for our food.”

And Roll Call has our own offering to Shribman, on where to get a “non-expense account lunch.” Brother blog Heard on the Hill has “Lunching Like a King in ‘This Town’” and includes a guide to getting a midday feast on the cheap, including Capitol Hill haunts like the Dirksen Southside Buffet and Michel Richard’s Central.

So Shribman, just in case you ever find yourself in Washington again, you’ve got plenty of places to get a bite to eat and not sacrifice your sanctified palate.
