At Wisdom, Judging the Genever

Oh, boy. It’s only a matter of time before a blogger becomes a part of the story.

This, alas, is one of those moments at Roll Call After Dark, as we get ready to help judge Wisdom bar and Diep9’s first combined Mixology Competition on Thursday night. I know, I know. It’s a dirty job, but someone’s got to do it.

Wisdom, as consumers of fine alcohol will note, is the cocktail parlor at 1432 Pennsylvania Ave. SE, a purveyor of fine mixed drinks in line with owner Erik Holzherr’s keen affinity for gin and other spirits. Diep9 from Belgium is a maker of genever, a sort of precursor to gin and the first of its kind to import to the United States.

The competition that RCAD will be helping judge, along with other professional drinkers, will be made up of industry people and amateur mixologists. The overarching goal is to evangelize genever, which is relatively unknown in the States, outside of imbibers in the know. If the “Martinez” genever cocktail I had the other night is any indication of genever’s powers, more people should get to know this spirit.

So come on down to Wisdom for the competition and heckle the judges as we sort out who mixes the best genever drink. It all starts getting under way around 7:30 p.m. at Wisdom.
