Just What the Good Doctor Ordered: Gonzofest 2013

Flying Dog Brewery in Frederick, Md., might be thousands of miles from his beloved Woody Creek, Colo., but we can’t help but think the late, great Hunter S. Thompson would be pleased with the thought of Gonzofest 2013, Flying Dog’s annual tribute to the good doctor and good beer.

The fifth annual Gonzofest, timed roughly each year to the gonzo journalist’s July 18 birthday, takes place Saturday at the brewery, from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion and We Are Hex will provide the music.

The brewery is charging $4 for each one of their “obscure, rare and experimental beers,” including its Brewhouse Rarities Pineapple Saison, Dogtoberfest Marzen with basil, green peppercorn and grains of paradise and Pearl Necklace Oyster Stout.

Food trucks will also be onsite — El Cuervo Tacos, The Smoking Swine BBQ and Wheyich Gourmet Sandwiches — so that no one goes hungry.

It’s $25 in advance.
