“Tootsie,” Dustin Hoffman’s 1982 star turn as a frustrated actor who disguises himself as a woman to get work, rounds out the 2013 Screen on the Green tonight on the mall.

Hoffman headed up an amazing cast — Jessica Lange, Teri Garr, Bill Murray, Dabney Coleman, Geena Davis, Charles Durning and even director Sydney Pollack — in the film about a man in a woman’s world. It’s also a showcase for early 1980s New York, a gritty world that’s largely disappeared.

Was it something in the air in 1982? Blake Edwards’ “Victor Victoria” also was a big hit that year, the story of a frustrated actress/singer who poses as a man who’s posing as a woman. Julie Andrews, Robert Preston and James Garner made that one, ahem, sing. Perhaps that’s one for next year’s Screen on the Green.

Tonight’s show, which starts off with Looney Tunes and the ever-awesome HBO dance, gets started around sundown, 8 p.m. or so, on the National Mall between Seventh and 12th Streets.
