Redlands Mayor Pete Aguilar, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee’s recruit to take on vulnerable GOP Rep. Gary G. Miller, touted the endorsements of two more prominent California Democrats on Monday.

Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom and Rep. Zoe Lofgren joined several California Democrats, including 13 members of Congress from the Golden State, in backing Aguilar in the crowded Democratic primary field.

Three other Democrats have entered the contest to oust Miller: former Rep. Joe Baca; attorney Eloise Gomez Reyes, who has the support of EMILY’s List; and local school board official Danny Tillman.

Baca has also touted endorsements from many of his former House colleagues, a few of whom disputed or reneged their support.

The 31st District remains a top target for Democrats since Miller won the seat last cycle — thanks in part to the state’s new top-two primary system. In 2012, four Democrats, including Aguilar, splintered the district’s Democratic vote and paved the way for Miller and another Republican to head to the general.

The district, however, has a strong Democratic lean; President Barack Obama carried it with 57 percent in 2012.

The National Republican Congressional Committee has placed Miller in its Patriot program for the most vulnerable GOP House candidates.
