Hill East Starch Corridor Takes Shape
In the Hill East neighborhood, a friendly burg that has few noshing establishments for its growing population, a burgeoning Starch Corridor is forming along 15th Street Southeast.
The Pretzel Bakery at 340 15th St. SE churns out fresh, hot soft pretzels, along with appropriate beverages like Wishniak black cherry soda and birch beer. And now Curbside Cupcakes is eyeing the old Crepes on the Corner storefront down the block at 15th and C streets. Prince of Petworth blogged about it today after the folks over at H Street Great Street first tweeted the news.
Crepes on the Corner closed its doors in August of last year, much to the consternation of nearby residents who had a casual, chill place to get breakfast, lunch and dinner that fit in well with the neighborhood vibe. The local ANC commissioner, Brian Flahaven, was occasionally seen toting a to-go treat from the place. Dogs were welcome on the inviting patio. They had their own garden along the patio that provided ingredients for crepes.
“The rumors are true,” Curbside Cupcakes tweeted back at our request for confirmation. Timing on when the sweet side of this savory-sweet street will open its doors is unclear, with Curbside Cupcakes tweeting to us that they are “not quite sure yet. We plan to reach out to the ANC and neighborhood when we do open.”
One thing that is certain is that the kids over at Payne Elementary School, across the street from the old Crepes on the Corner, won’t have to go to far to go into sugar overload.
