Journalists Run for Their Lives, and Pancakes

Washington’s press corps gets the chance to miss another deadline on Saturday, as ink-stained wretches and the ringers they bribe to be on their teams compete at the 2013 National Press Club Beat the Deadline 5K race.

If the thought of heckling the press — this one included! — appeals to you, head on down to the NPC (529 14th St. NW) at the way too early hour of 7:30 a.m.

Race Marshal Tony Horton, the brains behind the Rep. Paul D. Ryan-approved P90X workout, will be hanging out, probably making fun of how out of shape many of us scribes are.

All kidding aside, there are plenty of working journalists who are in pretty decent shape. CQ Roll Call’s team — Joanna Anderson, Shawn Zeller, Stacey Goers, Kristin Coyner, Daniel Peake, Hannah Hess, Amanda Hicks and Paul Jenks — are pretty serious at hoofing it.

Yours truly will be running with a separate team — Asleep at the Keyboard — with companeros Humberto Sanchez (also of CQ Roll Call fame!) and Fawn Johnson of National Journal.

It all goes to a good cause, with the National Press Club Journalism Institute sponsoring professional development and scholarships for young journalists. And everyone gets to eat pancakes after the race in the Press Club. Carb up for the next one!
