Brad Wenstrup Prepares for First Child

Freshman Rep. Brad Wenstrup, R-Ohio, will soon welcome a new member to the family.

Wenstrup and his wife, Monica, are expecting their first child in November, although they do not know whether it is a boy or a girl.

“We are not checking,” Wenstrup told HOH. “We’re going to wait to be surprised; we just hope for a healthy baby. We also have picked names, but we’re not telling people; we have a boy’s name and a girl’s name picked out, so we’ll know right away the day the baby’s born.”

Wenstrup, who married Monica in May 2012, said he is excited to be a father.

“I’m a little older; I had almost wondered if I would ever be married or have children, and Monica came into my life a couple of years ago and things have worked out well,” Wenstrup said. “What I hear from everybody is it’s going to change your life, and certainly our lives have changed in the last year and a half as it is, so we’re looking forward to one more.”

Fellow freshman Rep. Andy Barr, R-Ky., welcomed a child earlier this year, as did fellow GOP Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler of Washington. House Republican Conference Chairwoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers of Washington is pregnant with her third child and is due in December.

Wenstrup, a podiatrist and a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve, said his family converted the library with his military and medical books into a nursery and just ordered a crib. He said having a child will make his job in Congress even more personal.

“I think the stakes just got higher to make sure we leave this country better than we found it.”

Correction: An earlier version of this story misstated the number of terms Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler has served. She is in her second term.
