Obama Warns Social Security Checks Will Be Delayed Absent Debt Limit Hike

Seniors who rely on their Social Security checks might want to start pinching their pennies.

President Barack Obama warned Thursday that Social Security checks will be delayed if Congress doesn’t raise the debt limit soon — one consequence of what he warned would be an “economic shutdown.”

If the debt limit isn’t raised, Social Security checks “don’t go out on time,” the president said at an event in Rockville, Md.

Obama’s warning about Social Security checks came on the heels of a Treasury Department report, released Thursday morning, warning of the worst economic catastrophe since the Great Depression if Congress fails to act.

The administration is in a full-scale campaign mode to pressure the GOP to buckle, enlisting Wall Street and business leaders, who have said the House GOP should not shut down the government or threaten a default on the nation’s obligations.

Obama repeatedly called on Speaker John A. Boehner, R-Ohio, to allow a vote on a “clean” spending bill with no partisan strings attached to reopen the government and shortly thereafter raise the debt limit.

“Take a vote, stop this farce and end this shutdown right now” he said.

He also torched Rep. Marlin Stutzman, R-Ind., although not by name.

“We’re not going to be disrespected. We have to get something out of this. And I don’t know what that even is,” Stutzman reportedly told the Washington Examiner.

Obama read the quote mockingly and ripped the GOP for shutting down the government.

“If you’re being disrespected, it’s because of that attitude you’ve got,” Obama said.

The Indiana Republican later issued a statement walking back his quote.

“Yesterday, I carelessly misrepresented the ongoing budget debate and Speaker Boehner’s work on behalf of the American people,” he said. “Despite my remarks it’s clear that the American people want both parties to come to the table to reopen the government, tackle this nation’s debt crisis, and stop ObamaCare’s pain.”
