Heritage Action Supports Debt Limit Hike

Heritage Action for America CEO Michael Needham told reporters Wednesday morning that Republicans should raise the debt ceiling but keep the continuing resolution fight focused on dismantling Obamacare.

At a breakfast hosted by the Christian Science Monitor, Needham said he was “sure” the markets would react negatively if Congress doesn’t raise the debt ceiling. And he seemed to be aware of the economic and political hellfire that Republicans could face if they refused to raise the debt ceiling without concessions.

Instead, Needham said Republicans should keep the fight on the CR, and keep the spotlight on defunding Obamacare.

It was Heritage Action that largely brought the outside pressure on Republican leadership to pursue a strategy of defunding Obamacare through the CR, and many blame the group for advancing a government shutdown.

“My tactic is to focus on the CR,” Needham said.

He’s not alone.

Conservative columnist Erick Erickson advocated a similar position Monday, and two GOP lawmakers independently brought up the Erickson op-ed as a possible pathway ahead.
