Onondaga County Comptroller Robert Antonacci will not challenge Rep. Dan Maffei, D-N.Y., in the 24th District in 2014.

“After careful consultation with members of my family, friends and political supporters, I have decided to forgo a race for Congress next year,” Antonacci said in a statement Wednesday.

“This is not a decision that I have arrived at lightly, and like many others across the country, I believe we could benefit from new blood and a fresh perspective in Washington D.C.” he added. “This is a winnable seat for Republicans, but I will not be their candidate.”

The Syracuse Post-Standard recently profiled a would-be Antonacci bid and reported that he met with the National Republican Congressional Committee. Another Republican, former Rep. Ann Marie Buerkle, announced last month that she would not run against Maffei.

The race is rated Favored Democratic by Rothenberg Political Report/Roll Call.
