Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council, is considering a bid in Louisiana’s open 6th District, he confirmed through a spokesman to CQ Roll Call on Thursday.

Perkins, a former state legislator and fervent opponent to same-sex marriage, would be running to succeed GOP Rep. Bill Cassidy. Cassidy is running for Senate against Democratic Sen. Mary L. Landrieu in 2014.

“I can confirm for you that Tony hasn’t ruled out the possibility of running,” FRC spokesman Darin Miller said in a statement on Thursday.

“I’ve been encouraged by many people to consider getting in and I’m thinking about it,” Perkins told LaPolitics. “It’s an attractive prospect to be closer to home.”

If Perkins enters the race, it would not be his first congressional bid. He ran an unsuccessful Senate campaign in Louisiana in 2002, finishing in fourth place in a top-two primary with just 9 percent of the vote.

Should Perkins enter the race, he’d join businessman Paul Dietzel in a GOP primary.

Louisiana’s 6th District is rated a Safe Republican contest. GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney carried it by a 34-point margin in 2012.
