Speaker John A. Boehner wants the president to keep his promise to let people keep their health plans if they like them, not just apologize for failing to do so.

“An apology is certainly in order, but what Americans want to hear is that the president is going to keep his promise,” the Ohio Republican said in a statement issued after Obama said he was sorry in an NBC interview with Chuck Todd on Thursday.

“That’s why the House will vote next week to allow anyone with a health care plan they like to keep it. If the president is sincerely sorry that he misled the American people, the very least he can do is support this bipartisan effort. Otherwise, this apology doesn’t amount to anything,” Boehner said.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., issued a similar statement earlier.
