‘Citizens United’ Ruling Helped Unions Win State Elections

The impact of the Supreme Court’s ruling in the Citizens United case is still being analyzed but a new report shows it wasn’t only the Republicans that benefited.

In a handful of states in 2012, the Democrats benefited. Spending by outside groups during the 2012 cycle totaled at least $209 million in 38 states, according to a new report from the Center for Public Integrity. The study highlighted that “Pro-Democratic groups, many associated with unions, outspent their Republican counterparts by more than $8 million in those states.”
