In commemoration of Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday, the American Film Institute’s Silver Theater will screen the epic documentary “King: A Filmed Record … Montgomery to Memphis” on Monday, the federal holiday celebrating King’s legacy.

The three-hour film by two Hollywood legends, Sidney Lumet and Joseph L. Mankiewicz, traces King’s journey through the Montgomery bus boycott to his fateful last trip to Memphis, where he was assassinated. It includes the soaring rhetoric of King’s “I Have a Dream” speech in Washington and the roughest images from the time, when demonstrators were brutally attacked by Alabama officials in Selma.

Tickets are free, limited to four per person, and can be procured at the AFI Silver box office at 8633 Colesville Rd., in Silver Spring, Md., on the day of the show only. The movie starts at 11:30 a.m.
