Pennsylvania Primary: Clinton Does TV Ad for Margolies

Former Rep. Marjorie Margolies’ latest ad in her comeback bid in Pennsylvania features former President Bill Clinton touting her accomplishments on camera, a potentially game-changing spot less than one week from the Keystone State’s primary.

“I’m not coming here saying vote for her because 20 years ago she saved the economy,” Clinton says of Margolies in the 30-second ad, referring to her vote in 1993 that saved Clinton’s budget and ultimately cost the Democrat her seat in Congress. “She’ll take initiative, she’ll do things and stand up when she needs to stand up and cooperate when we need cooperation.”

Margolies, who is former first daughter Chelsea Clinton’s mother-in-law, is looking to retake control of the race from her biggest opponent in the primary: state Rep. Brendan Boyle.

Margolies hinted to CQ Roll Call on Friday that the Clintons, who had for the most part stayed quiet in the contest, could come in and help boost her bid in the home stretch of the primary. Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is also hosting a fundraiser for Margolies on Thursday in New York.

It is unclear how much money is behind the spot, which would have to air in the pricey Philadelphia media market. But Margolies has come under scrutiny by the other candidates in the contest for dipping into funds in the primary that she designated for the general election — a breach of campaign finance laws.

Margolies, Boyle, state Sen. Daylin Leach and physician Val Arkoosh are running in the 13th District Democratic primary to try to replace Rep. Allyson Y. Schwartz. Schwartz is running for the Democratic nomination for governor in the state.

The primary is akin to the general election in this heavily Democratic district — located in northeast Philadelphia and the wealthy Montgomery County suburbs.

Pennsylvania’s 13th District is rated a Safe Democratic contest by Rothenberg Political Report/Roll Call.
