State Sen. Emily Cain, the new Democratic nominee, will face former state Treasurer Bruce Poliquin, a Republican, in the targeted race for Maine’s 2nd District in November.

Cain defeated fellow Democratic state Sen. Troy Jackson, 72 percent to 28 percent, with 61 percent of precincts reporting, according to The Associated Press. She raised more money than Jackson, making her large margin of victory unsurprising .

Poliquin defeated Raye, 55 percent to 45 percent, with 61 percent of precincts reporting, according to the AP. This was Raye’s third attempt to win this seat — he lost in both 2002 and 2012 to Democratic Rep. Michael H. Michaud. Michaud is vacating the seat to run for governor.

Democrats, including Cain, were hoping for the chance to face Poliquin in November. In a recent interview with CQ Roll Call , Cain said Poliquin’s views are “farther out of step with Maine people than just about anybody [she knows] running for office.”

Republicans are targeting this seat  as a pickup opportunity. President Barack Obama won the district by a 9-point margin in 2012.

But the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has not reserved television airtime yet there this fall — a signal these operatives believe this might not be a competitive race in November.

Maine’s 2nd District is rated a Democrat Favored contest by the Rothenberg Political Report/Roll Call.
