Majority Leader-Elect McCarthy Inherits Top Cantor Aides
Four Eric Cantor aides will keep their jobs but have a new boss by the end of the week. Neil Bradley, Rob Borden, Robert Story Karem and Roger Mahan will work for incoming Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy of California.
Bradley will remain deputy chief of staff, a position he also held for two years when Cantor was the minority whip and when Sen. Roy Blunt of Missouri was House majority whip.
Borden, Cantor’s director of oversight, will continue to serve in that role on McCarthy’s team, advising House GOP leadership and “set[ing] oversight and investigative priorities,” according to a McCarthy news release Wednesday. Borden was at one point general counsel for the Oversight and Government Reform Committee and, before that, general counsel for the Committee on Education and the Workforce.
Karem and Mahan will both stay on as policy advisors, McCarthy announced.
Before taking the job in Cantor’s office, Karem worked with Vice President Dick Cheney, at one time advising him on Middle East policy as a member of the national security staff. He was also a legislative assistant for foreign policy for now-Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky.
Mahan is a former budget analyst with the Senate Budget Committee, and before that served as deputy assistant secretary for legislation at the Department of Health and Human Services.
McCarthy’s first official announcement of staff additions comes on the heels of a similar press release from Rep. Steve Scalise of Louisiana, who is replacing McCarthy as majority whip.
