A 12-week-old English bulldog burst onto the Capitol Hill scene this year, winning the second annual “Top Dog” competition.  

Hammie, who can be spotted roaming around the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, beat out nearly 60 other dogs in the online competition for cutest Capitol canine, hosted by constituent engagement firm Fireside21.  

The competition garnered more than 80,000 votes (participants could vote multiple times) and Hammie’s owner said the pup, who took 35 percent, had a fan base extending beyond Capitol Hill.  

“People were excited about her. Plus my family back home, they voted. And the people who I got her from in Tampa, they voted,” said Hammie’s owner, Corey Hamilton. “Everybody just started voting for her. She’s always out and about. I live on Capitol Hill, too, and so we’re always out and I think that’s what got the word out.” The pup’s real name derives from her owner’s surname, but he calls her Hammie because of her pudgy figure. She’s also quite the ham — walking up to everyone at the Top Dog reception Wednesday at Fireside21 while sporting a candy corn outfit.  

Hamilton does not work on the Hill but his best friend, Juan McCullum, works for the Oversight committee. McCullum brings Hammie to the Hill, sometimes along with his own English bulldog, Turner, who will be entering the Top Dog competition next year.  

But the small puppy also received another honor Wednesday night, as she was dubbed “Most Hardworking.”  

Two other Capitol Hill dogs were at the “Top Dog” reception: Ollie, a beagle from the office of Rep. Candice S. Miller, R-Mich., and Alvin, a huge Rottweiler from the office of Rep. Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y.  

Alvin was voted “Biggest Muscles.” Ollie took home the “Best Dressed” certificate — he donned a tuxedo for his photo in the competition.  

But on Wednesday night, Ollie was dressed to party in a Hawaiian shirt. He boasted about his “Best Dressed” win on Facebook  and maybe with his savvy social media skills, he could take Top Dog next year.
