Updated 4:45 p.m. |  The National Republican Senatorial Committee raised nearly $1 million more than its Democratic counterpart in May, according to figures provided to CQ Roll Call.

The NRSC raised $4.5 million last month, while the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee brought in $3.6 million.

Despite being outpaced in the fundraising race last month, the DSCC reported more cash on hand. The DSCC reported having $7.8 million in the bank, while the NRSC reported $6.3 million in its war chest.

The DSCC also carried more debt, reporting $11.4 million in debt as of the end of May. The NRSC, on the other hand, carried $2 million in debt as of the end of last month.

Republicans are defending a fragile Senate majority in 2016. Democrats must net five seats to take control of the Senate and are playing offense in several states President Barack Obama carried twice, including Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Illinois.
