Congressional Baseball Managers Joe L. Barton, R-Texas, and Mike Doyle, D-Pa., interrupted a series of votes Wednesday to once again bring the coveted Roll Call trophy to the House chamber, marking the Democrats’ seventh-straight victory over the Republicans in the 54th Annual Roll Call Congressional Baseball Game on June 11. With the victory, Democrats now lead the all-time series by one game, 39-38-1.

In a break from decorum, the team managers addressed not only one another, but addressed other players by their first names on the floor. Barton commended his team’s effort and warned Doyle the GOP is “back.”

“I will say that it was a pretty low blow to have the president of the United States come and interrupt the game, take away our momentum right when we had a big rally,” Barton said, referring to Sen. Rand Paul’s strikeout to end the fourth inning, leaving two runners on base, shortly after President Barack Obama made his dramatic entrance at the Democrats’ dugout, home-brewed beer in tow. 

“But I’m very proud of the Republican team, [and] I do want to congratulate Mike Doyle and the Democrats,” he said.

Nearly 10,000 fans attended the game, raising more than $300,000 for charity, according to Doyle.

“The real winners here are our charities,” the Pennsylvania Democrat said. “… We know some day the shoe will be on the other foot, but for the past seven years we’re kind of enjoying this.”

Despite the camaraderie, both managers squeezed in some trash talk before yielding back.

“I’ll put you on notice, Mike Doyle, the shoe’s going to be on the other foot next year. Be ready,” Barton said.

Doyle quickly shot back: “Talk is cheap Joe, bring it on.”
