Rep. Donna Edwards’ Senate campaign said Friday the Democrat raised $590,000 in the second quarter — ending the first half of the year with less than $1 million in the bank for her primary race for the open Maryland Senate seat.  

The campaign said the $924,000 raised year-to-date comes from more than 10,000 donors.  

A campaign aide said Thursday this is Edwards’ “strongest” quarter since she was elected to Congress in 2008. It also marks marks her first quarter with new campaign manager, Garrick Delzell, who joined her after working at Emily’s List.  

“Donna is building a campaign that reflects the values of Maryland’s working families,” said Edwards spokesman Benjamin Gerdes. “In just four months, she’s engaged 10,000 contributors and over 100,000 grassroots supporters in her race for the United States Senate. Donna’s supporters share her passion for progressive values and are committed to electing a fighter who doesn’t rely on the money and backing of special interests.”  

While her campaign boasted about the amount of money she raised, releasing the totals at 2 p.m. on the Friday of the Independence Day weekend — taken by most as a holiday — could be construed as an attempt to release the news when few are paying attention.  

A campaign aide told reporters Thursday the campaign was releasing its numbers Friday to make way for a “big policy roll out” the campaign views as “much more important” next week.  

Rep. Chris Van Hollen, another Maryland Democrat seeking the party’s nomination to replace retiring Sen. Barbara Mikulski, has not yet released his fundraising totals. A source close to Van Hollen — a seasoned politician who led the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee from 2007-2011 — said he will report having about $3.5 million in his campaign account.
