Rep. Chaka Fattah, indicted Wednesday on 29 counts of racketeering conspiracy, bribery and wire fraud as part of an FBI and IRS probe, told reporters at the Capitol he’s innocent and will seek re-election to his Philadelphia seat.

“First of all, it’s a great way to start the August break, and it will keep you all busy, I’m sure. You’ll get to write one more story,” the Pennsylvania Democrat said. “But it’s been an eight year matter, and we’ve moved from an investigation to an actual allegation and I think I’ll stand by my original position which was as an elected official, I’ve never been involved in any illegal activity or misappropriation of funds.”

Not only is he not stepping down, he plans to seek re-election: “We’re going to keep trying to help people between now and when my innocence is proven. … I will be on the ballot in my district and I will offer myself and we’ll have to live with the judgment that [voters] make.”
