Updated 7:35 p.m. | A shooting incident at Union Station put Capitol Hill on alert just as the House wrapped up its final votes for the week.  

Police said a woman was stabbed and a male suspect was shot by a security officer Friday at the transportation hub just north of the Capitol. The suspect died several hours later, according to police.

A “pop” of gunfire around 12:40 p.m. Friday sent the station into lockdown, according to witnesses. Two women who worked in Union General told CQ Roll Call they closed the doors to their store until Amtrak Police evacuated the area about 10 minutes later.  

Angie Harlan, 36, called the situation scary, “especially because of the day,” referring to the 14th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.  

Shortly before 1 p.m., Capitol Police sent a message to the congressional community. “Due to police activity, stay away from the area around Union Station until further notice,” it stated.  

Capitol Police assisted officers from Amtrak and the Metropolitan Police Department with traffic and pedestrian control around Union Station, and temporarily provided mutual aid, according to Capt. Kimberly Schneider.  

On campus, pedestrians asked police on the East Front what was happening. A helicopter circled over Union Station, and sirens blasted from vehicles responding to the incident.  

By 1:22 p.m., Capitol Police issued an all clear to the Hill. A message obtained by CQ Roll Call stated, “The police activity at Union Station has concluded.”
