Freshman Rep. Barbara Comstock, R-Va., holds a strong lead against a generic Democratic opponent, according to polling by the National Republican Congressional Committee.  

Comstock — who does not yet have a Democratic opponent as none have announced bids in this northern Virginia district — leads a generic Democrat 49-36 percent, according to the NRCC’s poll.  

Comstock is also viewed favorably by 45 percent of likely voters, while 29 percent view her unfavorably, the poll found.  

The poll also found former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, the Democratic frontrunner for president, underwater in favorability, with 39 percent viewing her favorably, as opposed to 56 percent who view her unfavorably.  

Comstock is a top Democratic target in 2016. GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney won this seat by a 1-point margin in 2012.  

Comstock handily won the seat in 2014, when it came open for the first time in more than two decades because of former Rep. Frank Wolf’s retirement. The race is currently rated a Leans Republican contest by the Rothenberg & Gonzales Political Report /Roll Call.  

A court recently ruled Virginia’s congressional map must be redrawn for the 2016 election, meaning this district could change. However it’s unclear how different the seat will look, and when the new lines will be announced.  

The poll surveyed 473 likely voters through a mix of automated and live dial phone calls from Sept. 12 through Sept. 16. It was conducted by Harper Polling and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.47 percent.
